Adult grief support groups

Grief shared is grief transformed

Our volunteer-led, in-person groups bring together people close in age who are grieving the death of a parent, partner, sibling, child, or another important person. Groups are organized by age and relationship to the person who died.

Contributions range from $1 to $50 per session. You choose the amount you can afford, and no one is turned away because they cannot pay.

Support after a death
where grief does not need to be fixed or resolved, and you don't get pressured to achieve “closure” or to “move on.”

“I never thought I could speak about my wife's death or cry. In this group I was given the opportunity to feel, and they welcomed me without judgement. I have learned that grief is forever. I am grateful to this program, and I can say I am walking towards acceptance.”

15-minute intro call

When you submit an inquiry form, you'll be prompted to schedule a 15-minute phone call. We'll learn about your experience, what you're looking for, and tell you about our services. If groups seem like a good fit, we'll invite you to schedule an intake appointment; otherwise, we'll provide referrals and resources to better support you.

45-minute intake appointment

One of our clinicians will explore your experience of grief with you so we can learn more about you and your person who died. If the clinician and you decide together that Our House NYC is a good fit, you'll be placed on the list to be notified for an upcoming group as it forms. Intake appointments are held via Zoom. In-center appointments are available on a case-by-case basis and can be discussed during your intro call.

Waiting for & joining a group

Groups start on a rolling basis, and group formation is based on the number of inquiries, Group Leader availability, Center capacity, and other factors. There is typically a waiting period while we form our groups. We are available to discuss finding other support while you wait for your Our House NYC group to begin.

Support that meets you where you are

Groups run for six months

You'll be matched with people close to you in age who are grieving the same kind of relationship: a partner, a parent, a sibling, a child, or another important person. Your group meets every other week for 90 minutes, with the same 8 to 12 people each time.

And when your six months end, you're welcome to rejoin for another six.
